Lord of the Rings Musical
The first show of the Lord of the Rings musical in Toronto met with mixed reviews.
The Lord of the Rings musical, acclaimed as the most costly stage production yet, met with mixed reviews upon its first show this weekend in Toronto. Critics have highly praised the background scenery and lighting (special mention to the ethereal treetop dwellings of Lothlorien and the underground Mines of Moria), but felt lost in the tangled plots of Middle Earth.
The story follows Frodo Baggins, played by James Loye, and his quest to save Middle Earth by destroying the ring of power. Three acts take the audience through the dream-like and misty Mines of Moria, Forest of Fangorn and to the final battle at Mount Doom.
The musical based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic trilogy has a 55-member cast who slip into 500 costumes and engage in fight scenes and acrobatics atop a 40-ton, computer-controlled stage floor with 17 elevators, which spin and rise adding to the magical illusion.
The Lord of the Rings musical is scheduled to go to London in 2007, according to lead producer Kevin Wallace, formerly in-house producer with Andrew Lloyd Webber's London based The Really Useful Group.
