Bachke Rehna Re Baba: Review
My point exactly, says Smruti Desai.
I usually don’t go to watch movies in the theatres. And definitely not movies like Bachke Rehana Re Baba. But my friend absolutely wanted to watch a movie. Basically any movie was ok by him, but the paucity of time had us going to a seedy theatre in Chembur (I don’t even remember the name. Well, who would want to, especially after a
BKRRB?).
Anyway, I repented the moment I saw the first reel. A board outside the theatre should actually say ‘Danger: Lethal: Bachke Rehana Re Baba’. I did not expect much of the movie, but thought it would be a bearable entertainer. But alas, there are no words to describe the movie. It is a loser from the word ‘GO’. If we have the likes of Rekha and Mallika Sherawat wasting their acting skills (yes, Mallika can act too!) on such a poor excuse for a movie, I think I’ll stop watching Hindi movies. And this is my advice to every die-hard Hindi movie fan. I mean, I’d rather watch B-graders of the likes of Mastani, Mashooka, and Revathi-The rag picker, if skin and a tacky storyline are all that I’m looking for. As a matter of fact, even these B-graders have a storyline, no matter how implausible.
But the story of BKRRB takes the cake, there is no story, plausible or implausible. Its just random collections of escapades of Mallika and Rekha. It is supposed to be a take-off on the Hollywood movie Heartbreakers starring Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love-Hewitt, where they are a mother-daughter pair who swindle rich and old guys of their money. In this case, Rekha and Mallika form an aunt-niece duo out to swindle the rich old guys from India to Mauritius.
As for the performances, I think Rekha should stick to her real-life performance of a diva, period. She should stop acting and just do an occasional interview if the acting
bug bites her. For Mallika, all I can say is you live and learn. Better luck next time, maybe you might just get a chance to display your acting skills and not the other assets.
And please, whosoever thought of casting Paresh Rawal as a Punjabi? He looks like a Gujarati stockbroker who is down on his luck and is acting to survive. Paresh Rawal speaking in Punjabi is like a crow trying to swim in water. The only person who is worth looking at is Satish Shah, as a rich Sindhi
gutka king. He is just too good. It is his best acting in a long time. Without saying much, he just steals the thunder from under Rekha. Even as a dead body his acting skills surpass those of the rest of the cast put together.
