Dangerous Cosmetic Ingredients
What to watch out for when you buy cosmetics.
Alpha-Hydroxy Acids:
Found In: Moisturizers, toners, cleansers, masks, age-spot removers
Effects: AHA is known for accelerating the exfoliation of dead skin cells. But they can also increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun by as much as 50 percent, leaving you exposed to accelerated skin aging and the possibility of skin cancer.
Formaldehyde/Formalin
Found in: Nail polish, shampoos, soaps, skin creams
Effects: Can cause allergic reactions, headaches, in some cases asthmatic attack.
Imidazolidinyl urea and DMDM hydantoin
Found In: Skin, body and hair products, antiperspirants and nail polish
Effects: Carcinogenic, can cause joint pain, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pain, chronic fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, asthma and may weaken the immune system.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate SLS
Found In: Shampoos, bubble baths, toothpastes, and lotions
Effects: Can impair the immune system, eye irritations, skin rashes and allergic reactions.
Synthetic colours:
Found In: Cosmetics, bodycare products, often listed as FD&C or D&C colors
Effects: Carcinogenic
